One of the hardest parts of this new attitude about food is forcing myself to eat breakfast. I am not a morning person. At all. I once threatened to "Lizzy Borden" my mother because she woke me up too early on my day off. Food is the last thing on my mind when I'm dragging myself out of bed. It's not that I don't like breakfast foods, quite the contrary, I'd just rather have that five extra minutes of sleep. The past couple of days I've done alright on the breakfast front. Yesterday was a Quaker Oats breakfast bar and today was a spoonful of peanut butter from the jar in the cabinet at the library. (That sounds far sketchier than it actually is.)
Eventually I'd like to be able to get myself together enough that I can do really fantastic breakfasts. Not anything fancy, but eggs and toast would be killer awesome. Even a stock of cereal that I enjoy would be a treat for when I get tired of the breakfast or cereal bars.
What about you guys? What's a "normal" breakfast for you?
I am in love with Special K chocolate cereal. Frosty type flakes, hunks of chocolate, and actually healthy. My hypoglycemic self is also a fan of low-sugar instant oatmeal or carb-lovers yogurt with bananas cut up. Breakfast is totally not my fav meal, but cereal I can manage at ungodly hours.
ReplyDeleteBreakfast bars are a good solution to this. Yogurt's a good one too. If you can find a particularly tasty brand/flavor of yogurt, it's a fabulous snack.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking a good yogurt and finding a (healthy) cereal I love may be the answer when I get bored with breakfast bars.
ReplyDeleteKit, I know you eat you some Luna bars, are those mothers expensive and are they good?
On most days, while I would love to have a yummy egg & toast style breakfast, what I end up with is just whatever I can grab on my way out the door. Luckily, I have found something good for me that I enjoy. They're called vitamuffins. I don't know if you like muffins, or if these would appeal to you, but they really work for me. They are crazy good for you with lots of fiber and good stuff, made without preservatives or bad stuff, and they are pretty damn tasty. The chocolate flavors are the best by far. And they are only 100 calories apiece. They aren't cheap--I am lucky to find 4-packs for less than $4. But when I think of what they are replacing, I think it's worth it. I used to spend much more than that on unhealthy breakfasts anyway.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that has worked well for me in the past, is fruit. I can't find my copy of Skinny Bitch, but one thing from that book that I really took to heart was eating fruit for breakfast. Eat a piece of fruit. If you're still hungry, eat another piece of fruit. I was surprised how well I took to that. Just eat fruit till you're satisfied. It's super healthy, fast and easy, and depending on what fruit you eat, it's pretty affordable as well.
Other than that, plain oatmeal with a little fruit, nuts, or a drizzle of honey, low-sugar cereal or granola, or plain yogurt with some fruit/granola.
If I ever had time, a veggie omelet would really do the trick. I LOVE breakfast food...
